China’s most expensive film “Asura” has become a flop of historic magnitude having brought in only 7.3 million USD even though the budget as reported, was over 110 million USD.
Its failure has been so ghastly; it has been pulled from theatres in its opening weekend.
The movie was the first in a trilogy that was inspired by Tibetan Buddhist Mythology and intended to promote traditional Chinese culture.
The projected loss of $106 million would make it the fifth-biggest failure in movie history worldwide, right behind “Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas” which suffered losses of $125 million, according to statistics from Box Office Mojo.
The movie took six years to make with costly visuals highlighting 2,400 scenes with special effects in its running time of 141 minutes.
