Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as ‘Shi’ites’, have reportedly stoned a policeman to death and set a patrol van ablaze following clashes between them and the Nigerian Police in Kaduna state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mukhtar Aliyu, who confirmed the incident, however, said details will be provided later.
The members were said to have been protesting the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and other members by the federal government, just before his arraignment at the Kaduna state high court on Thursday.
The trial was however stalled by the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Gideon Kurada.
Bystanders reported gunshots along the Ahmadu Bello Way and Katsina road area, causing traders at the Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Central market to close their shops and run for safety.
