As many waited in anticipation of the kick off of the biggest football tournament, the Russia 2018 World Cup started officially on the 14th of June with interesting pairings and goals.
The African representatives kicked off their campaign on a losing note as Egypt lost to Uruguay, while Morocco lost to Iran.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria took on Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium in their group D opener and lost by 2 goals to nil courtesy an own goal in the first half by Oghenekaro Etebo and a second-half penalty from Luka Modric, which sealed the win for Croatia.
The head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr expressed his dissatisfaction after the loss.
The win for Croatia puts them ahead in the Group D standings with three points; their Group D opponents, Argentina and Iceland have a point each after their one all draw.
The Super Eagles next game will be against Iceland, as Nigeria’s representatives hope to redeem themselves against a team that held Argentina to a draw.
