A petition to the International Labour Organisation, ILO, by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, against state governors that are owing salaries, have been condemned by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

The NLC had in its petition to the Committee on the Application of Standard of ILO, accused the Kaduna and Kogi state governments of short-changing workers, and asked the ILO to send a high-powered delegation to Nigeria to investigate.

The Minister who spoke in Geneva said the decision by the leadership of the NLC was done in bad faith and was not in the nation’s interests.

According to the Minister, part of the petition on the retrenchment of unqualified teachers in Kaduna State was being addressed by government, and as such should not have been mentioned.

Reacting to the Minister’s criticism, NLC Deputy President, Comrade Peters Adeyemi, said the matter was taken to the ILO because the governors were behaving like untouchables and their actions needed to be checked.
