There is palpable fear in Ondo following the alleged killing of a Fulani herdsman by a middle-aged farmer on Saturday at Imo-Arigidi, Akoko West-North-West local government area of the State.
The farmer alleged the herder was grazing his animals on his farm and destroying the crops there.
The victim’s colleagues, on getting wind of what happened, attacked the farmer with machetes leaving him for dead. But he survived and was taken to Ikare-Akoko State Specialist hospital under heavy police protection.
Local sources alleged that further attacks were planned by the Fulani herdsmen on the residents of the town but the police in Okeagbe intervened and stopped the intended attack.
PlusTv Africa, however, gathered that efforts are already ongoing to ensure that the situation does not degenerate further, as the traditional ruler of the community is already in discussion with the Hausa community to sustain peace in the area.
An emergency meeting was also called by the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Olugbenga Ale.
He said that the state was peaceful and appealed to the communities to accommodate, and not discriminate against, non-indigenes. He promised that justice would be done in the matter.
Razak Rauf, Police Area Commander of Akoko, also promised that the police would carry out thorough investigations into the matter and that all the culprits involved would be brought to justice.
