The All Progressives Congress (APC), United Kingdom Chapter, has reaffirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day is not aimed at helping him win elections in 2019.

The party in a statement by its Acting Publicity Secretary, Jacob Ogunseye, on Thursday advised Nigerians to dismiss insinuations, saying that the development was for all lovers of democracy.

Ogunseye quoted the leader of the U.K chapter, Ade Omole, as saying that the recognition of June 12 was long overdue.

The chapter chairman, Omole,  who said that Nigerians in the Diaspora are very pleased with the declaration, noted that President Buhari had done what presidents couldn’t do since Nigeria’s democracy 19 years ago.

Earlier today, President Buhari had on his Twitter handle announced that May 29 often marked as Nigeria’s Democracy Day will now be replaced by June 12 to honour the late the presumed winner of the June 12 election in 1993, Chief MKO Abiola. Buhari also awarded Abiola the highest honour in the of the land, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.

He also honoured Abiola’s running mate, Amb. Babagana Kingibe, with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
