The National Conscience Party (NCP) says it has nothing to celebrate in the Federal Government’s decision to give a posthumous award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) to its late Founder, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
While declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari also gave Fawehinmi a national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger(GCON).
Though the NCP praised Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day, the party’s chairman in Lagos, Fatai Ibu-Owo, noted that their leader, Gani Fawehinmi, would have rejected the award, following the prevailing situation in the country.
Ibu-Owo recalled that Gani had once turned down a national award for the same reason, condemned the poor state of the economy and the increased the killings across the country.
He also noted that Chief MKO Abiola was a symbol of democracy and justice and fought for the masses with his life.
