Following the new changes in law, Saudi Arabia has begun issuing driving licenses to women for the first time.
The highly anticipated move to allow women to drive comes as moves to liberalize and improve human rights in Saudi Arabia are being encouraged by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The aim is to remodel the kingdom as a credible trading partner to international powers and businesses.
However, although this has been a major move in Saudi Arabia’s history, many have described this as a façade. In the midst of all the change, 11 female activists who championed the women’s right to drive were detained along with other activists who have been criticising the authoritarian regime.
