The new leader of Mozambique’s main opposition, Ossufo Momade has gone into hiding in the forests in order to facilitate coordination of activities, his party said.
Until his death on May 3, Momade’s predecessor, Afonso Dhlakama also lived in the mountains of Gorongosa following a targeted attack on him in September and October of 2015.
According to the opposition party spokesman, Alfredo Magumisse, Momade will continue the mission of negotiating the ongoing dialogue to achieve peace and stability in the country while in the forest.
The decision for Momade to relocate to the forest was made by the party’s National Political Committee on Sunday in a meeting with the leaders of Renamo military wing in attendance.
Renamo, acts as an opposition party and an armed militant group in Mozambique and has continued to demand more and effective integration of its followers into the police and military.
Renamo gained substantial concessions from the government concerning devolution and got an assurance from President Filipe Nyusi that he would continue talks.
