The President of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara has said he is free to run for a third term in the country’s presidential election come 2020.
The 76-year-old said this in an interview with a French Magazine, where he emphasized that under the new constitution he is free to run for the presidency and that his two terms begin to count in 2020.
Ouattara who was elected in 2010 is making this claim for the first time and observers are hinting that such comments are capable of provoking his political enemies to anger.
Though he has expressed his eligibility to run for a third term come 2020, he also added that the situation in the country would determine his action, as the peace and stability of the country is his topmost priority, and he would pursue that even as a matter of principle.
The new constitution was approved by Ivorians in a 2016 vote that saw no member of Ouatarra’s main opposition in attendance.
