Two-time titleholder, Maria Sharapova is squaring up to take on Serena Williams in the French Open last 16 after defeating sixth seed, Karolina Pliskova in Paris.

Sharapova, 31, is back at Roland Garros since 2015 and said this was her match to win in order to get a chance.

Russian 28th seed, Sharapova won with a baseline game at 6-2 6-1 against the Czech, Pliskova, who got to the semi-finals at the 2017 Roland Garros.

Williams, the winner of 23 Grand Slams, is to face Germany’s Julia Goerges on Saturday.

This is Williams first Grand Slam after taking time out in 2017 to have her first child.
