Galactico’s boss, or rather ex-boss, Zinedine Zidane has sent shock waves through the football world as he announced in an unscheduled press conferences that he is quitting as coach of Real Madrid. This comes just a few days after leading his former side to the Champions League victory over Liverpool in a 3-1 win.
In his press conference he said he took the decision to step down as he felt the team needed a change, a new voice and a totally different methodology. He did not, however, shut down the door to ever coaching Madrid again, as he said this can be a “see you later’ situation. The former french international also confessed that the club had given him everything he needed. He further went on to say that the decision, to some, might not make a lot of sense, but for him, it made sense.
Zizou, as he is popularly known around the world, then went on to thank the fans for all their support and love.
The former Real Madrid, Juventus and Bordeaux midfielder is arguably the best coach in Real Madrid history; in just two-and-half years as the clubs manager, he won the UEFA champions league title three times in a row, a feat which has never been done by any team in champions league history, no team has held that trophy two years in a row in modern football. He joins coaches Carlo Ancheloti and Bob Paisely as the only coaches to have won the Champions League trophy three times. But Zidane now leads the pack, having won his consecutively, and with the same club.
In his time in Madrid he won 104 of his 149 games in charge. He also won two Club world cups, two UEFA Super Cup, one La Liga Title and one Supercopa de Espana.
In his playing days, Zidane also won the FIFA world cup with France in 1998 and the Euro’s in 2000. He won FIFA world player of the year three times in 1998, 2000 and 2003, won the European footballer of the year in 1998 and French footballer of the year twice in 1998 and 2002.
