Protest hits Imo as naval officer kills resident

Residents of Awaka community were on the streets to protest the alleged killing of a pedestrian by a naval officer. The incident occurred during a stop-and-search on the Owerri/Umuahia Expressway. This led to pandemonium in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The Nigerian newspaper, Punch, reports that the youths of the area who began the demonstration confiscated the AK 47 belong to the officer after the incident on Saturday, May 26.

The youths were also said to have set a building, which served as a transitory dwelling for navy officers on fire.

An eyewitness, on condition of anonymity, told reporters that an officer had instructed his colleague to shoot the pedestrian who died on the spot.

The eyewitness also said that the youths then attacked the naval officers.

Andrew Enwerem, the police spokesman in Imo, confirmed the incident and said that the police had retrieved the AK 47 rifle. The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanci, has ordered an inquiry into the killing of the pedestrian, with the state CID to lead the investigation.
