As a result of the increase in ocean pollution, the European Commission intends to ban 10 plastic items. The drafted rules were published on Monday but first need to be signed by all members of the European Union and the European Parliament.

Although the rules, if signed, may take up to four years before they can be implemented. The legislation also wants to use this medium to have plastic producers take up the cost of waste management and clearing-out measures.

According to research, there would be more plastic than fish weight in the ocean by 2050. Hence the reason for this new development.

The commission also proposes that EU states collect 90 percent one-time use plastic bottles into a new recycling program.

According to the European Commission, if the new rules are effected, by 2030, it could cost businesses over $3.5 billion yearly, save consumers $7.6 billion, create approximately 30,000 jobs and save up to $25.6 billion in environmental pollution and clean up.
