At least 3 huge Canyons have been discovered in Antarctica close to the south poles. The discovery was made using a radar by a researcher, Dr Kate Winter and other scientists from the Northumbria University. UK
She has identified them as the Foundation trough, which is also the largest at 350km long and 35km wide, the Patuxent trough at over 300km long and 15km wide and finally the Offset Rift Basin at 150km in length and 30 km wide. It was a surprising discovery as the troughs have been buried under hundreds of metres of ice.
This is an important discovery as it provides more insight into the flow of ice and could increase the flow of water from the ice melting away at the south pole towards the ocean, raising the sea levels more significantly than previously estimated. This, therefore, will help prepare better to combat global warming effects.
