In a once-in-a-generation referendum, the Irish government opened voting today to repeal part of the constitution in what is commonly known as the 8th amendment. The vote will decide, and potentially reverse the ban on fetal terminations in the country.

Currently, abortion is only allowed in a case of an ectopic pregnancy, where the woman’s life is at risk. Abortion is, otherwise, not allowed even in cases of rape, incest or fetal abnormality.

The referendum begins on Thursday, and the country remains divided due to religious and traditional beliefs. This will be Ireland’s sixth voting on this issue.

The result of the referendum will be expected on Saturday evening.
