A RAINY FRIDAY IN LAGOS

Our reporter Vyonne-Tracy is on the streets of Lagos this morning and says its one of those days that has many motorists wishing they were their own bosses, as they would be able to stay warm at home and avoid the craziness associated with a rainy day on the streets of Lagos.

She reports that some streets are impassable due to flooding from the rain and lack of or a bad drainage system.

Those that are passable would require motorists to drive at almost snail speed for many reasons: to ensure they do not damage their vehicles on immersed objects or potholes, to avoid splashing rainwater on other road users, and to ensure they do not create or become involved in any accidents.

There are reports of an accident at the Gbagada end of the Third Mainland Bridge causing slow moving traffic; flash floods causing very bad traffic jams on Mobolaji Bank Anthony, Ojota and Ikorodu road.

Diya street, which leads to New garage, Bariga, Ikeja, Magodo and Gbagada phase II is flooded with traffic backed up heading towards Third Mainland Bridge.

Lagosians on any day without rain usually experience bad traffic, then one can only imagine when it rains with all of the factors, such as bad vehicles on the roads, rain, flooding, bad roads and drivers who are not in as much of a rush as you are, all seeming to work against you coming from Ikeja to the island in 40 minutes.

One thing is for sure this morning: for those out on the roads, many wish they had left home with some essentials such as the old trusty umbrella or a raincoat, and top on the list is rubber or waterproof shoes.
