NAFDAC calls for inter-agency cooperation to curb drug abuse

With directives from the Federal government, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria(PCN) has begun the retraction of cough syrups containing Codeine.

The Registrar of PCN, Mr Elijah Mohammed, noted this during an interview session on Saturday in Abuja.

The directive coming from the office of the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, instructed PCN, NAFDAC and other regulatory bodies to oversee the retraction of the codeine-containing syrups from the market.

Mohammed said that enforcement exercises have been executed in Ogun, Sokoto and Nasarawa States, and one is currently ongoing in Adamawa state, as he called on manufacturers, importers and distributors to exercise ethical and moral restraint in the sales and supply of codeine-containing syrups.

National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicines Vendors (PPMV), among other stakeholders, in the pharmaceutical industry are contributing to the retraction process.
