At the New York auction held on Monday Night, a nude artwork produced by Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian painter sold for $157.2 million.
The nude painting,“ Nu couche(Sur le cote gauche)” a Modigliani’s masterpiece, was done a century ago.
This makes Modigliani the third highest selling artist at auction just after Leonard da Vinci and Pablo Picasso. In 2015, Modigliani had sold a nearly 58 inches wide nude painting at Christe’s.
22 reclining nudes and 13 seated nudes were completed by Modigliani between 1916 and 1919.
According to Simon Shaw, co-head of impressionist and modern art at Sotheby’s, the nude painting sold on Monday depicts the changing status of women during World War I.
