Authorities in Kenya say the deadly Patel dam that burst on Wednesday, killing dozens and destroying homes and property, was illegal.

The Water Resources Management Authority (warma) spokesperson while speaking told reporters that the dam has no permit and as such illegal. An allegation the farm’s manager, Vinoj Kumar has denied.

Aftermath of the dam blast

The search for missing persons has continued as death toll hit 45 as at Friday afternoon, according to the regional police commander. He also added that most of the dead victims were children swept away by the water. On Thursday, dead bodies were being collected from the surface but by Friday afternoon, volunteers and red cross society started digging out more dead bodies from the ground.

The unfortunate incidence happened at about 21:00 local time, when the dam burst and pushed down 70 million litres of water about a metre and half high and 500 metres wide towards homes and sweeping away homes and property.
