The Nigerian Senate has established a joint Senate and House of Representatives ad-hoc committee to carry out a detailed probe into last month’s stealing of the mace from the Senate chamber.
Inaugurating the committee, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki described the event of April 18th as one of the darkest days of Nigeria’s democracy and vowed that the legislature will do everything within its power to ensure the restoration of the institution’s integrity.
The committee will be chaired by Deputy Senate Leader Bala Ibn Na’Allah while other members include Senators Abu Ibrahim, Shehu Sani, John Owan Enoh, Suleiman Hunkuvi, Baba Kaka Garbai, Binta Garba and Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan.
The investigation of the theft comes few weeks after the chamber was invaded by unknown men who made away with the mace, escaping thereafter in a Sports Utility Vehicle.
The mace serves as a symbol of authority
However, few days after the incidence, the police confirmed the arrest of 6 suspects in connection to the desecration of the hallowed chamber, which the broad daylight stealing of the mace represents. The police claimed that investigations were ongoing to this effect.
Saraki charged the committee that all who were involved in this heinous crime must be brought to book.
Saraki urged the panel to see its final verdict as instrumental in restoring sanctity, dignity, security and moral authority to the National Assembly.
