Akwa Ibom State Government has announced its partnership with the German authorities and private investors aimed at setting up medical varsity.
The foundation stone was laid on Friday in Afaha Obong in the outskirts of Uyo for the construction of the Thomas and Grace Medical University.
The construction of the institution was a collaboration of the Thomas and Grace Investment Limited, the state government and some of the global medical and research institutions.
The governors representative, deputy governor Moses Ekpo said Nigeria was in need of very qualified medical professionals and the benefits of the project would be felt both locally and around the country.
Projected statistics show that the facility will accommodate up to 35,000 workers which will by projection have a positive effect in terms of job creation among other benefits.
MD/CEO of T&G, Isaac Amos said the project and partnership were aimed at addressing three main needs: the urgent need for qualified healthcare professionals in the country, world-class medical university capable of innovative research and development and need for affordable health care services.
Amongst the institutions that collaborated are HKS Inc, USTAWI Research Institute in the US, Center for Health System & Design in Texas, UKE Consult, and Hellmann Worldwide Healthcare Logistics.
