Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has received praise and approval from the World Health Organisation for the pledge he made towards providing basic primary healthcare nationwide.
The commendation came from the W.H.O Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who said he was impressed with the Saraki initiative.
Saraki, during his speech delivered at the 58th Annual General & Scientific Conference of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), stated that universal healthcare is a promise made to Nigerians and one that he and his colleagues intend to keep.
the Senate President reiterated that primary and universal healthcare provision is a key legislative agenda for the 8th Senate under his leadership.
In June 2017, the Senate President started the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage and advised the Federal Government to honour the Abuja Declaration of 2001, requesting at the same time the full execution of the National Health Act of 2014.
The 55-year-old Senator practised as a medical doctor at Rush Green Hospital in London, UK, before venturing into banking and then, politics.
