Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge acknowledged as one of the best marathoners ever has won the London Marathon for the third time. He crossed the finish line at two hours, four minutes and seventeen seconds. The Kenyan defied the heat of a record high temperature of twenty-three point two degrees Celsius, the highest in the marathon since nineteen eighty-one.

Although he appeared set for a new world record, Kipchoge couldn’t hold momentum, as he seemed to tire towards the end of the race. But his effort was still good enough to see him finish ahead of Ethiopia’s Tola Shura Kitata who placed second and Britain’s Mo Farah, who has broken a British record time in an elite men’s race, coming third.

Farah registered a two hour, six minutes and 21 seconds timing to erase a thirty-three-year-old British record previously held by Steve Jones.

With the win, Kipchoge has claimed $55,000 top prize and a bonus $100,000 for running under two hours and five minutes benchmark.

The joy was double for the Kenyans as Vivian Cheruiyot came first in the women’s race, registering a personal record of two hours, eighteen minutes and thirty-one seconds
