In reaction to sustained attacks on Benue communities by suspected herdsmen, the state governor, Samuel Ortom has urged youths not to give in, saying “It is not enough to just run away, you must stay to defend your land. These killings are enough, and we are not going to take it again.”
The governor said this during his address in Gwer West Local Government, when he visited Adaka and Nagi communities.
The governor was also quoted as saying “I know as a scholar of the Bible, David … killed and slaughtered Goliath with just stone. There are stones all over the place. Do the same thing and support the security men.”
While a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, warned against a breakdown of law and order, this call may be seen by some as fuel to the discontent of various groups across affected communities, advocating for residents to arm themselves.
