A cholera outbreak in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe has claimed 30 lives, up from the previous figure of 26 recorded last month, according to the Health Ministry.

According to the ministry, the number of infections has also risen to 839 from 844 recorded in March.

Heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and poor hygiene have worsened the situation in Lilongwe.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry, Joshua Malango has put the number of cases in Lilongwe at 352 with 18 deaths.

Drinking water from shallow, contaminated sources has been blamed for the outbreak.
