President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi has been given a new title by the ruling party CNDDFDD. He is now to be addressed as “Supreme Eternal Leader”.
Only last weekend, in Buye, in the Ngozi Province of Northern Burundi, top party officials who met to review the state of the nation noted that the president had already been declared “Chairman of the Council of Wise”, and were unsure if the new title has really inferred more powers on him.
However, the vice
-president, General Evariste Ndayishimiye, pointed out that Nkurunziza, as their “Elder” and “Father of all” could not be compared to anyone in CNDDFDD.
But the latest developments have not gone down too well with many Burundians. it, in fact,
sparked a mockery frenzy on social media, with critics describing the president’s regime as a cult of “His Majesty King Nkurunziza 1”. There was even an image of the president dressed like Emperor Bokassa, the now late former maximum ruler of Central Africa Republic.
The Presidents many supporters have jumped to his defence, describing him as a great African leader who is representing Burundi’s values and has stood up against the West.
