Commonwealth Games: South Africa shocks Jamaica to win 100 metres gold, silver

South Africa’s Akani Simbine upset Jamaica’s Yohan Blake to win the 100 metres gold medal for South Africa at the Commonwealth Games on Monday. A packed crowd at Carrara Stadium saw Simbine blaze down the straight and crossed ahead of compatriot Henricho Bruintjies in 10.03 seconds. Jamaican Yohan Blake finished with bronze in a time of 10.19 seconds, after qualifying fastest with a time of 10.06 in the semi-finals. Simbine said winning Commonwealth Games gold was the highlight of his career. “For me, this is probably my best achievement so far,” he said.

“I placed fifth at the Olympics, fifth at the World Championships, but this is my first international title.”

Nigeria’s Seye Ogunlewe wasn’t fast enough to finish on the podium, Ogunlewe, who started in lane 2 ran alongside fellow Nigerian Enoch Adegoke, who finished seventh.

Ogunlewe finished with a similar time with the Bronze Medallist Yohan Blake who crossed the line before him posting a time of 10.19.
